Through my seminary, One Spirit Interfaith Seminary, I am taking a workshop on Antiracist Spirituality. It is being facilitated by Regina Shands Stoltzfus and Tobin Miller Shearer. They have recently co-written a book, "Been In the Struggle: Pursuing an Antiracist Spirituality."
Their message is challenging and powerful. Since all that is important for life is storied, we began with a memory from our story and then listened to theirs. They have been working together for thirty years, so they had quite a story to tell! They are both Mennonite and began their work as part of the peace and justice division of the Mennonite Central Community. Their honesty about their friendship as a black woman and white man gave real meaning to their words. I especially loved that they insisted that their work be joyful. And they are clear that dismantling racism will be a long journey.
We have another session tonight. So, more to come!
