Hungry Ghosts

Someone recently shared Thich Nhat Hanh's teaching on the Hungry Ghosts. (link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3-aJON5780) The hungry ghosts are those who are truly lost yet unable to be nourished. Their throats are described as thin as a needle.

Recently, two people were shot because they mistakenly went to the wrong house. The shooters seem to fit the description of "Hungry Ghosts," lost in their fear.

When I hear these stories, I am saddened by these violent responses to innocent mistakes. What is happening to us as a society? Is fear now in control? But, I refuse to accept fear as a dominant emotion. I am even more convinced athat compassion can and must win over fear. All our lives depend on it.
